Eve Arnold / by Michael Lorenzini

"If a photographer cares about the people before the lens and is compassionate, much is given. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument." -Eve Arnold, 1912-2012

The first woman to become a full member of Magnum Photos, Eve Arnold was a photojournalist when that meant something.  Her work wasn't about flashy technique or lighting, just about getting your subjects to trust you and then waiting for the right moment.  Her golden age was the 50s and 60s, but she was taking photos up through the 1980s. She died Wednesday at the age of 99.
